Why is exotic animal ownership on the decline?

I think between the negative only media (on everything not just captive critters) and always increasing PETA influence, we are doomed.
It is not us that is doomed, it is the animals that are in our care. Their welfare is at stake. So called "professionals" are called in, and the general public/legislation see those credentials of theirs, and automatically think that these professionals know best. When I questioned face to face with one of these, I asked him what exotic animal experience he had to be allowed to quote on exotic animal ownership. He only had experience in turtles! But the media misinterpreted him as having big cat knowledge. When I asked for a retraction, they refused. So yes, these so-called professionals with no or very little hand on experience are being called upon as professionals. I remember years ago, that one primate sanctuary was very active in banning primate ownership, but the truth came out about this sanctuary. Alot of monkeys died in their possession, some monkeys bodies were found in pools of water, and their cages were deplorable. They moved and changed their name, and now have a new director. THAT new director has NO primate experience, but is repeatedly called upon for expert advice.
