Steve is one of the few australians who have crossed the regional barrier to be recognised and a global citizen in the work that they were pursuing. Watching this person in action was like " Are you out of your *####*** mind ? "

But then you slowly realise that this is not a gimmick or stunt that a showman is trying to pull, there is in fact a deep rooted passion for animals that is driving him to work on preserving them. Its been over 3 years since we lost Steve, but the passion seems to be carried forward by Bindi and Bob with same vigor.

Australian Zoo at Queensland, even though has lost its first citizen, seems to be banking on the passion and inspiration that he has passed on to his kids. His trade mark of khakhi shorts and chirpy tone with tons of energy is something hard to forget.

May the spirit and passion of "Crikey " pass to all entrepruneurs in making for all that you are striving for.

I remember the day Steve died. I had an email exchange with him, back in the early 90's before he became so big. An acquaintance of his was doing a genealogy study of white tigers, and it led to one that was (still is) here. She isn't white, but carries the white gene and comes from a pure white parent.

Steve was CCed on an email I got, so I CCed him back with my reply. LOL
His untimely and unusual death struck me hard.

When he died from the stingray encounter, there were some comments from the extremist animal rights groups, about how he deserved it by bothering wildlife. I got perturbed and wrote an op ed on the NWHS Newspage. I will link it here, for those who want a blast from the past. I'll look in the archives...

There is also a link in the editorial to that weeks old newsletter, #17 back then. You can click and check that out as well.
